Our Story
We came up with the idea of the Habit Dance Project in April of 2010 while we were hanging out in a dance studio in Buffalo, NY. All of us were modern/contemporary dancers craving the opportunity to create and perform works from our own ideas and styles of movement. We all agreed that this was a “habit” we just couldn't kick... So, we met up again and started to rehearse.
As the idea evolved, Habit Dance decided to take on the mission of connecting dancers from all over WNY and providing them with performance opportunities. Throughout the summer and fall of 2010, a group of 15 dancers participated in local festivals and performed at other venues throughout WNY including:
The Infringement Festival, Music is Art, Spot Coffee in Williamsville’s Open Art night, Fox Run Orchard Park ~ Retirement Community and more. By joining together, we were able to find and create opportunities better than one of us could do alone.
Habit Dance encourages all members to seek out their own opportunities as well. We choose to call ourselves a “project” rather than a "company", so that dancers don’t feel confined to who can be involved or what the future might bring.
Lastly, as dancers or choreographers take advantage of these opportunities, they also give back to the project. They provide support in networking, marketing, planning, new ideas, new opportunities, raising money and much more, which is necessary for the project to continue to work and grow.
So that's the basic idea, but most importantly... we have a ton of fun creating dance with our friends from all over WNY!
